Pensacola Downtown Improvement Board Grateful for Community Support that Saved the Downtown Post Office

PENSACOLA, FL, February 1, 2010 – U.S. Representative Jeff Miller announced on Friday that the Downtown Pensacola Post Office has been removed from the closure list and will remain open.

The Pensacola Downtown Improvement Board (DIB), creator and sponsor of www.SaveOurPostOffice.com and leader of the effort to keep the Downtown Post Office open, credits and thanks the hundreds of businesses and citizens of Downtown Pensacola that got involved for the victory. Without them passionately voicing their concerns about the proposed closing of the Post Office and how it would have affected their way of life or their businesses, the outcome might have been very different.

During the six month effort to save the Post Office, hundreds of people attended Town Hall meetings, collected signatures on petitions, wrote letters to their elected federal officials, forwarded viral communications on the subject, and generally spread the word to their friends and colleagues, demonstrating how essential the Downtown Post Office is to the vitality of the downtown community. Of special note in this success were the many personal contributions by Buzz Ritchie, Nathan Kahn, Mike Wiggins, the Pensacola Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, the American Postal Workers Union, and Derek Cossom in helping keep this issue in the spotlight and on the agendas of our federal officials.

Strong and united support from our elected officials was also critical to the results generated by the “Save Our Post Office” effort, including the steady and visible interventions by U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, U.S. Senator George LeMieux, U.S. Representative Jeff Miller, and Mayor Mike Wiggins throughout the past months.

“The Downtown Post Office has been an anchor for commerce in Northwest Florida for well over 150 years,” said Kim Kimbrough, director of the DIB. “We’re overjoyed that it’s staying open and very grateful to all of the businesses, citizens, and elected officials who pulled together and rallied with us to help save it.”
